ART CURRICULUM INTENT STATEMENT
INTENT
At Butterwick C of E Primary School we believe that high quality art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop creative practical understanding.
Children will:
- Develop ideas - This involves understanding how ideas develop through the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art.
- Master techniques - This involves giving the children an opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas.
- Take inspiration from the greats – This involves learning from both the artistic process and techniques of great artists throughout history.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our Art curriculum at Butterwick C of E Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and linked to our termly topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject.
Lessons build on prior learning and teachers support children to learn and remember more through:
- The emphasis on knowledge ensuring that children understand the context of the artwork as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by.
- Opportunities to be expressive and imaginative as well as practising and developing mastery in the key skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art.
- Teaching and exploring the visual elements of art and design e.g. line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form and function.
- Questioning to challenge pupils to apply their learning in a range of ways.
- Opportunities to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
IMPACT
We will develop artists that:
- Have the ability to use visual language skilfully and convincingly (e.g. line, shape, pattern, colour, tone, form) to express emotions, interpret observations, convey insights and accentuate their individuality.
- Have the ability to draw confidently and adventurously from observation, memory and imagination.
- Have a knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers.
- Have independence, initiative and originality which they can use to develop their creativity.
- Have the ability to reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate their own work and that of others.
- Have a passion for and a commitment to the subject.
